Going Digital for Home Games: APCOA Installs New Parking System for 2,300 Spaces at the schauinsland-reisen-arena
Duisburg, August 6, 2026 – In the future, the stadium experience will begin digitally as soon as fans arrive. For MSV Duisburg’s first home game of the new 2026–2027 Third Division season on August 8, APCOA Germany, in collaboration with stadium operator Duisburger Stadionmanagement (DSM), is introducing a modern parking system at the schauinsland-reisen-arena. In parking lots P1 through P4, vehicles will be automatically registered via their license plates during major events at the arena. During MSV Duisburg home games, parking areas P2 and P3 remain accessible exclusively to individuals with parking permits issued by MSV Duisburg.
APCOA manages a total of approximately 2,300 parking spaces in lots P1, P2, P3, and P4. Ten cameras in the parking areas record the license plate numbers of vehicles entering and exiting. A parking ticket is no longer required. The parking fee is six euros per game.
Payment is entirely cashless. Fans can conveniently pay the parking fee directly via ScanPay using their smartphone up to 24 hours after the event, or at one of the five automated payment kiosks on the grounds before, during, or after the event. All they need to do is enter their license plate number. Upon exiting, the system automatically recognizes the vehicle and verifies whether the parking fee has been paid. Signs with QR codes are available on-site for digital payment.
The new solution is designed to streamline operations in the parking lots on home game days and reduce traffic congestion on main roads by eliminating the need for manual payment processing. This makes the parking process clearer for fans, while allowing for more efficient management of operations on the premises and reducing traffic jams at the heavily used entry and exit points.
To further relieve traffic on Kruppstraße, the access road between parking lots P2 and P3 on Kalkweg will be opened to P2 parking permit holders in the future.
The signage plan in the area surrounding the arena, which is currently incomplete, will be updated over the course of the year and adapted to the optimized parking situation.
“Our traffic observations on game days have shown that the payment process at the entrance, in particular, has regularly caused traffic backups on the surrounding streets. This is exactly where the new system comes in: Automated processing eliminates this bottleneck, resulting in a noticeable improvement in traffic flow.”
“At the same time, it is important for us to emphasise that the number of available parking spaces remains limited – the system can optimise processes, but it cannot create additional parking spaces,” says Christopher Mainka, Managing Director of Duisburger Stadionmanagement.
“For many fans, match day begins as soon as they set off. That’s why parking needs to be as simple and hassle-free as possible. Together with DSM, we are introducing a modern system featuring automatic number plate recognition and cashless payment on site, which makes life easier for fans and gets them to their destination more quickly.”
“It is particularly at very busy events that you can see what a difference a digital parking solution can make,” says Katrin Teichert, Managing Director of APCOA Germany.
The new system will go live on 8 August 2026, coinciding with MSV Duisburg’s first home match, and will subsequently be used at all other major events at the schauinsland-reisen-arena.
In addition to the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena, APCOA manages car park operations at other stadium venues in Germany, including the Allianz Arena in Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park and FC Schalke 04’s VELTINS-Arena.
