July 2nd 2014, APCOA PARKING hosted its first Mobility Summit at Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany. Policymakers and lobbyists, auto makers and providers of mobility platforms discussed the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow's urban mobility.

The supporting program brought guests up to date with highly topical talks and presentations by notable speakers, including Ralf Bender, CEO of APCOA PARKING Group. In his key note, Bender provided an overview and insights into the ten major trends that are manifest in Germany's big and mid-sized cities, and that will present urban planners and residents with new challenges. Bender called for an interdisciplinary effort to expand the investment and innovation policy.

Arguing that it is time to make existing parking space available for future use, he advocated taking a profitable value-add approach. Indeed, he called it the only way to preserve personal mobility in the future. The underlying basis is a functional infrastructure in urban-planning terms. This presupposes an intact, smart road network and, in order to refinance these measures, the widespread introduction of affordable parking and the continuous expansion of smart technologies. Bender sees the collaboration of all stakeholders as the way forward to achieve this goal: cities and municipalities, service providers, the automotive industry, and infrastructure providers.

Other speakers included Mathieu Meyer, Partner and Head of Automotive at KPMG AG, Matthias Braun Secretary General of AvD, and Joachim Hauser, Vice President Business Development Mobility Services at BMW Group. All in all, the summit presented fascinating insights into the entire spectrum of future mobility. Whether digital networking of cars or multifunctional car parks, the event underlined the need for adjustments given the imminence of far-reaching changes.
